STRUCTURE OF INTELLECT

COGNITION
OF
FIGURAL
CLASSES
(CFC-I)

Why is CFC Important?
Academic skill: Visual Conceptualization

Curricular area: Reading Readiness

Consequences if ability is not developed: Difficulty with classification; will be inhibited in science.

Strengths if ability is well developed: Good foundation for conceptualization
Summary: Underlying ability for reading comprehension. The ability to classify concrete (figural) objects is a prerequisite to reading comprehension. No matter how reading skills are taught—all methods of reading instruction assume the type of concept comprehension that underlies classification.

(NSR-ll)

Why is MFU important?
Academic skill: Memory for Visual Details.
Curricular area: Reading/Language Arts.
Consequences if ability is not developed: Weak in memory for details.
Strengths if ability is well developed: Able to remember incidental information.
Summary: Underlying ability for reading. Memory is an important component of reading. Without sufficient memory abilities a student must constantly review to achieve comprehension.
Underlying ability for retrieving previously stored information. Information retrieval is obviously aided by memory, both directly in terms of one’s own memory, and indirectly in terms of retrieving archival information from physical and/ or electronic storage.

CONVERGENT
PRODUCTION OF
SYMBOLIC
TRANSFORMATIONS
(NST II)

Why is NST important?

Academic skill: Speed of Word Recognition. Curricular area: Reading.

Consequences if ability is not developed: Will loose place while reading; skipping words or lines.

Strengths if ability is well developed: Able to scan data rapidly; excellent for programming.

Summary:Underlying ability for reading comprehension. Speed of word recognition (speed of reading) is not the same as reading comprehension. It does, however, affect the rate of comprehension and seriously affects scores on standardized reading tests.

Underlying ability for understanding instructions.Understanding concepts as one reads goes hand in hand with the rate of reading. A slowed down speed of reading can be caused by poor vocabulary and by poor visual attending. Speed can be improved by becoming more familiar with small bits of information.
