I’ve had the pleasure of being the teacher at Southcrest Christian School in Lubbock, Texas for four years. In those four years I’ve learned more about people and education than I ever did in college, and I know there is so much more to learn!
I think the thing that gives me the most pleasure in working my students is the self-confidence and happiness I see develop in them. I have so many success stories to share, but I will just give some snapshots of a few of them.
One particular student began to ride his scooter and bike all over the block after working in the IPP lab; he couldn’t do that before! Another student went to Disneyland with his family and was so much more confident; he skipped and danced with the Chipmunks in front of a room full of people. His mom sent me a picture of this proud moment!
My own son began to climb higher on playground equipment, became less fearful of situations, and is so organized he makes me look bad! Thank you, Certified Learning!
I’ll end with the story of a student who came to us in 4th grade. When he came to Southcrest, he would communicate some, but used sign language most of the time. He was out of control on the IPP equipment and it was going to take some work to get him in control. After working with him for a year, he started talking more and he was able to use the equipment in a controlled manner.
After two years, other people in the school noticed how together he seemed and commented on it. He started communicating even more and could stay with his class for longer amounts of time. This spring he was able to start vision therapy with a developmental optometrist. Three years ago he wouldn’t have been able to sit still long enough for the screening! I’m so proud of the progress he’s made.
SOI has become a part of my life. I love getting to tell people what I do for a living. There are so many parents searching for answers and SOI gives them hope. I definitely don’t do this just for a paycheck. I do this because I get to change lives, one student at a time!
